Research Interests

My areas of expertise are fisheries and marine resource management with emphasis in gear technology, bycatch, discards, hook and release mortality, socioeconomics, and habitat degradation as well as fisheries management issues and policies. I conduct an education, outreach, and applied research program for the commercial and recreational fishing industries primarily in New Jersey, but also from Massachusetts to North Carolina. I serve as the Science Liaison for the National Fisheries Institute-Scientific Monitoring Committee (commercial trawlers, docks, and processors from Rhode Island to New Jersey) and also work with the National Fisheries Institute-Clam Committee.

Current Research Projects

• Exploring mechanisms for linking climate change, long-term larval fish abundance and water quality monitoring data with fisheries management decisions. (National Estuarine Research Reserve System Science Collaboration Grant).
• Preventing bycatch of yellowtail flounder in the scallop fishery. (NOAA/NMFS Scallop Research Set-aside (13-SCA-06) through the National Fisheries Institute-Scientific Monitoring Committee)
• Management strategy evaluation for summer flounder. Partnership for Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Science Program. (NOAA/NMFS)
• Collection of sex ratio data for summer flounder landings: commercial and recreational landings. New Jersey Sea Grant College Program and Partnership for Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Science (NOAA/NMFS)
• A pilot project to utilize aquaculture to enhance the natural population of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, in the Delaware Estuary. (E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Company)
• Effects of flow dynamics, salinity, and water quality on the Eastern oyster, the Atlantic sturgeon, and the shortnose sturgeon in the oligohaline zone of the Delaware estuary. (Supplement to Year 3 for the Planning Assistance to States Agreement between the Department of the Army and the South Jersey Port Corporation to Seaboard Fisheries Institute)
